Project summary
The project aims to strengthen climate resilience by prioritizing flood and erosion reduction strategies, with a focus on Nature-Based Solutions (NBS). Mombasa, a key economic hub in Kenya, faces rapid urbanization and increased vulnerability to coastal erosion and flooding. The project includes the assessment of current and future risks, the consolidation of socio-economic and environmental data, and the projection of urban development scenarios to guide interventions.
The project conducts a risk analysis that integrates both structural and non-structural solutions and collaborates with local stakeholders to develop a Strategic Investment Plan focusing on cost-effective and sustainable options. This plan will support urban and coastal resilience in alignment with Mombasa’s Climate Action Plan, while providing co-benefits for biodiversity and coastal tourism. The results will inform dialogue between the World Bank and the Kenyan government, preparing Mombasa for a more resilient future.
